Toronto Public Health is urging anyone who ate at Sierra Grill in North York on Jan. 23, 2011 to get the Hepatitis A vaccine.
An employee of the restaurant, located at 2901 Bayview Ave., near Sheppard Avenue, tested positive for the disease. Anyone who dined there on the date in question may have been exposed.
According to a press release from Toronto Public Health, if "someone with Hepatitis A infection handles food without properly washing their hands after using the toilet, the infection can be spread to others who eat food contaminated with the virus."
The recommendation is simply a precautionary measure, as the risk of infection is low, said Dr. Michael Finkelstein, Associate Medical Officer of Health.
Most people make a full recovery from the disease, which presents with symptoms including fever, jaundice and nausea within 15 to 50 days following exposure.
Toronto Public Health will be hosting free clinics on Jan. 27, 28 and 29 at North York Memorial Hall for anyone who may have attended Sierra Grill on Jan. 23. The vaccine is most effective within two weeks of exposure.
