If you ride a bike and live in the city, chances are you’re familiar with having your lights stolen. And after one too many dark rides home, avid Toronto bikers Steve Tam and Taylor Martin decided to do something about it. With their new company, Beacon, the two have come up with a light that “lives on your bike,” circumventing the need for that annoying detach and re-attach dance that sandwiches every nighttime commute.
The lights — equipped with two LEDs that provide 150-plus hours of well-lit cruising — attach to your bike with a zip tie, so if your would-be thief should happen to have a pair of scissors handy, or pliers, or maybe a Swiss army knife, your light would still be in trouble. But the hope is that most light thefts are crimes of opportunity, with normal lights just crying out to be hoisted if you forget to remove them.
So these lights may not be completely theft-proof, but they are safer, and they look totally cool. Zip us up!
