Former resident earns Walk of Fame nod

Author and activist Farley Mowat will be added to landmark this fall

Former Richmond Hill resident, author and political activist Farley Mowat was recently named as one of the 2010 inductees to Canada’s Walk of Fame.

“I was kind of amused to find myself in the company with these really famous people,” said Mowat of the honour. The long-time environmental activist and author of works including People of the Deer, Lost in the Barrens and Never Cry Wolf was named along with six other Canadians. “When you speak of someone like Farley Mowat, you can look at him in so many ways,” said Peter Soumalias, CEO and president of Canada’s Walk of Fame.

“You can look at his critical acclaim and his literary success, but there’s much more than that.” Potential candidates for the honour must have either been born in or spent the majority of their creative or formative years in Canada.

A minimum of 10 successful years is required to qualify, as well as a body of work recognized as having a significant influence on Canada’s cultural heritage. Mowat will be recognized on Oct. 16 at Toronto’s Canon Theatre along with fellow inductees, including Sarah Polley.
