Five reasons to embrace your inner tween and check out this year’s MMVAs

Have you been trying to figure out what’s going on with the construction at MuchMusic’s back lot lately? Scratched your head over the wristband hoopla that’s been in the news? That’s probably because you’re not 14, but the MuchMusic Video Awards are going down this weekend, and the star-studded awards fest isn’t looking too bad this year. Here are five reasons why.

Snoop Dog is Performing. The Doggfather is bringing his West Coast swagger to the MMVAs for the first time to show the young cats how it’s done. If anyone can get a party started, it’s Snoop Dee-Oh-Double-Gee. Here’s hoping he busts out some classics for us, uh, old folks.

You (kind of) get to be a part of the show. One of the coolest parts about the MMVAs is the People’s Choice Awards segment, in which viewers are encouraged to vote for their favourite Canadian and international artists. (This is the part where we snub Justin Bieber and vote for Arcade Fire.)

One word: Gaga. Yes, the Lady is back with her second MMVA performance. Her last one included an exploding stage, a flaming bra and a moving subway car — just your average, tiny, intimate affair. So let’s hope she livens it up a bit this time around.

The Black Keys are set to rock out. Every now and then, it’s nice to put aside the pyrotechnics and get to what really matters at a live concert: music, played with instruments and accompanied with some amazing lyrics. This pretty much sums up the awesome-ness of The Black Keys, and you’ll surely be howlin’ for them on Sunday.

The red carpet. The MMVAs’ red carpet has been a source of some amusing controversy over the years. Ginger Spice once mentioned she was looking for “a good Canadian man” to fertilize her eggs, and a few years ago Tori Spelling took a jab at her husband’s ex-wife. With a slew of celebrities set to either perform or present at this year’s award show, there are sure to be a few more memorable moments on this year’s red carpet. (And did we mention Gaga’s appearing?)
