What a few thousand dollars a night will get you in cottage country this summer

With cottage season around the corner, there’s no time to waste if you want to secure one of Ontario’s most coveted rentals for a weekend getaway this summer, once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. While the province is full of beautiful properties available for rent, there are a handful of truly incredible spots you can book for premium prices that could be worth the extra cash.

When it comes to Ontario’s most stunning lodges, modern farmhouses and spacious waterfront retreats, a weekend stay could run you upwards of $5,000 to $10,000. If you’re willing to splurge on an unforgettable weekend at one of Ontario’s most luxurious properties, you’ll want to check out these five listings.

The Lodge: $3,111/night

With six bedrooms, 10 beds and nine bathrooms, this 12,000-square-foot mansion in Ottawa is built for a get-together of epic proportions (once it’s safe to gather, of course). The impressive property was custom-built with entertaining in mind, which is why it includes bonuses like a theatre, a private beach and a cigar room (yes, that’s a thing!). Located on a peaceful waterfront lot within Ottawa city limits, the Lodge is the perfect place to book for a long-overdue reunion with friends or family.

Merrill House was built in 1878 for Edwards Merrill, Prince Edward County’s first magistrate and county judge, barrister and the Mayor of Picton. In 2018, the new owners purchased Merrill House, developing it into the luxury boutique hotel it is today through extensive renovations. The eclectic collection of one-of-a-kind art and antiques has been gathered by the owner through years of travelling around the globe. This rental is for the front half of the house which comes with a private entrance. The back half houses the hotel, restaurant and bar which all guests have access to. There is also an outdoor barrel sauna and large patio and garden.

Burnt Barns: $3,188/night

Entirely clad in charred cedar, this architectural wonder was built using a 4,000-year-old traditional Japanese sustainable building technique called sho shugi ban. The cottage is comprised of three separate barns connected by glass walkways and features plenty of walkouts to the gorgeous pool. Aside from the sleek, modern design of the home, this property boasts 50 acres of land on the Niagara Escarpment, an outdoor dining table and outdoor shower.

Compass House: $4,816/night

Nestled just an hour outside of Toronto in Mulmur Township, Compass House sits at the top of an impressive hill on a sprawling 200-acre piece of land. The contemporary farmhouse was designed by Toronto architecture firm Superkül and features 4,300 square feet of quality finishings such as oak floors and minimalist Scandinavian influences. Other perks of this property include the pool, outdoor fireplace, a courtyard, a hot tub and so much more.

Cornerstone: $5,000/night

Boasting incredible floor-to-ceiling windows, vaulted ceilings and five spacious bedrooms, Cornerstone is the epitome of Muskoka perfection. The entire cottage is handcrafted with every detail from the stone finishes to the impressive cabinetry in the kitchen thoughtfully curated. Stretching 200 feet across the shoreline of Lake Rosseau, Cornerstone is an idyllic summer retreat with plenty of space for boating or just enjoying the summer sun.
