Five Guys Burgers and Fries got some major publicity a couple years ago when Barack Obama hung out there, but now that Obamamania is a thing of the past, is Five Guys still cool? Torontonians will find out this summer, when a location of the American burger chain is set to open in Scarborough.
Five Guys has flirted with Toronto for a while now, opening locations in Vaughan and Mississauga, but this will be the first location in the GTA proper (thank God for amalgamation).
According to the Five Guys website, the new spot will be at 800 Warden Ave., and while a spokesperson told us that the lease hasn’t been finalized, she did say that if everything goes as planned, the new Five Guys should open in June or July. She also added that the chain is scouting locations in other areas of Toronto, too.
Five Guys is known for its no frills menu (burgers, fries, hotdogs and that’s about it), its use of peanut oil and its never-frozen policy. It seems to have a loyal following — as one Chowhounder put it, "Licks and South St. are in big trouble."
And for those still on the Obama bandwagon, he apparently prefers his cheeseburger thusly: with lettuce, tomato, jalapeno peppers, and mustard.
