Fast-food feast from the Middle East

Dr. Laffa’s landmark Steeles and Dufferin area eatery serves one of the best shawarmas, thanks to his traditional Iraqi flatbread. The slight downside? Lab results reveal fairly high fat content and sodium levels.

Dr. Laffa is a kosher restaurant in North York dishing up delicious Middle Eastern cuisine. The turkey shawarma with lamb served in a laffa (flatbread) is one of the most popular sandwiches — and it’s to die for! But with more than 1,000 calories and 45 grams of fat in it, you will be consuming about half your daily nutrition in a quick 30 minutes. You’re eating a six-ounce bread as well as consuming about eight ounces of turkey. You’re also getting about a day’s worth of salt. My advice is to split this scrumptious sandwich or order it in a pita, which has much less fat and calories, and start your meal with a soup or salad.
