Black Dice Cafe is a neighbourhood gem. Perched on a once-sleepy neck of Dundas Street West, amidst Portuguese sports bars and a bevy of newcomers like Cafe Bar Pasta, this retro space from owner Hideki Saito rings in its fourth birthday come September. Inside, regulars sit at ’50s-style tables — dotted with lamps emitting a greenish glow — and nurse beverages against a backdrop of rockabilly tunes.
Drink offerings include numerous of brews on tap in addition to a collection of mostly sake-based cocktails. The Hime ($8) — which translates into princess in Japanese, and is one of Saito’s daughter’s names — starts with Gekkeikan Traditional sake. It’s mixed with plum wine, peach schnapps and lime juice, and it’s served in a martini glass.
This sweet Japanese cocktail has some citrus edge, making it a light and refreshing option for a hot summer’s eve.
