College finds surgeon guilty of misconduct

The Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons has found a local cosmetic surgeon guilty of professional misconduct after a lengthy hearing.

The case, which has been tied up in disciplinary hearings for almost two years, examined Dr. Behnaz Yazdanfar’s care of several patients, including Krista Stryland, at her Yonge Street and Finch Avenue clinic.

The college found Yazdanfar guilty of unprofessional conduct in four other patient cases besides that of Stryland.

Dr. Stephen Mulholland, a Toronto plastic surgeon who testified at the trial, said Yazdanfar was working “way outside the scope of her training” as a family physician.

Dr. Bruce Liberman, an anaesthetist who worked with Yazdanfar, was also found to be unprofessional, failing to meet Ontario standards of practice in the treatment of 55 of his patients.

The college will hold penalty hearings for each doctor Aug. 29 to 31 said college spokesperson Kathryn Clarke.

Criminal charges have not been filed for either physician.

With 68 hearing dates in total, the case marks the college’s longest disciplinary issue to date.
