It’s land ho for Captain John’s Restaurant. The kitschy boat-restaurant at the foot of Yonge Street, which has managed to stay afloat for decades despite boatloads of legal issues and poor reviews, has finally been shut down by the city, the Toronto Star reports.
The city has shut off the restaurant’s water, thereby taking the wind out of its sails.
Plagued by debt issues for some time, John Letnik, who owns the old cruise ship, owes quite a few doubloons in back taxes, rent and insurance (more than $500,000, according to the Star).
Letnik, who’s been seeking a buyer for his floating restaurant for years, told the CBC that he has asked for more time to find a new captain for his ship so he can “retire with dignity.”
In the meantime, the city’s going to have to figure out what to do with the monstrosity: it has no engine, and is “mired deep in the muck of Lake Ontario.”
Letnik has until July 27 to remove everything from the ship.
