Caplansky’s defends its meat mettle against Goldin’s and The Stockyards in this year’s Deli Duel

This isn’t your average hot dog eating contest. This Sunday, meat-crazed Torontonians will partake in yet another culinary competition, this time in the form of a deli sandwich duel. The Stop Community Food Centre is hosting the 2nd annual Deli Duel, a smoked meat sandwich competition wherein Caplansky’s Delicatessen (the reigning champion) will battle against Goldin’s and The Stockyards for the 2011 title.

The showdown will take place at Wychwood Barns from 1p.m. to 5 p.m., and diners will have the chance to sample the goods from all three competitors and then vote for the winner, who will receive the prestigious Deli Duel Trophy (Wolfie’s Deli was also scheduled to compete, but ended up pulling out of the event). Other vendors include Kiju Organic Juice ($3), Steam Whistle ($5 a pint), and Tipicular Fixin’s cocktails ($5).

Best of all, you can kill three proverbial birds with one stone at this event: help out The Stop Community Food Centre (to which all the proceeds go); take your Dad out for Father’s Day and, of course, eat your fill of smoked meat sandwiches.
