The controversy surrounding shark hunting and shark fin soup is no secret, but who would have thought Brantford, Ontario would be the first place in Canada to do something about it? Brantford is set to become the first Canadian jurisdiction to ban shark fin products in the hopes that other cities like Toronto will follow suit, The Globe reports.
The practice of shark finning, wherein hunters slice a off a shark’s fins and throw the creature back into the water, alive, has been coming under fire as of late. Those fins often end up in shark fin soup, a popular Asian delicacy that’s readily available here in Toronto (shark fins are, incidentally, tasteless).
Brantford’s city council will vote on the issue on May 24, and little resistance is expected — probably because shark fin soup is pretty much impossible to find there anyway.
The hope is to set a good example, but enacting something similar in Toronto could be a bit more difficult because, you know, people actually eat it here. And supporting a shark fin ban in Toronto is probably too pink to fly in this day and age anyway.
