Headaches? Jaw clicking? Grinding or clenching teeth at night?

He obtained his licence to practice in Canada in ’95 and has been providing modern dentistry to our community ever since. He’s been trained by leaders in dentistry such as Drs. TMD (temporomandibular disorders) is a disorder affecting the body’s two temporomandibular joints, which are located directly in front of your ears. They are triangular-shaped and designed to act like hinges for your jaw, allowing you to comfortably and easily open your mouth to eat, drink, and speak. A patient struggling with TMD may experience a wide range of painful or aggravating symptoms, among them frequent headaches or migraines.

Other TMD symptoms include neck, shoulder, or lower back pain; difficulty hearing or ringing/ pressure in the ears; pain, tenderness, or swelling of the face; jaw popping/clicking; tooth sensitive to cold or ice and worn or broken teeth.

The causes behind TMD can range from misaligned teeth and/or teeth grinding to whiplash, sports injuries, or missing teeth. TMD is a disorder of the jaw joint, nerves, teeth and chewing muscles. Stress can also be a cause of it.

Tek-Scan/EMG is a revealing diagnostic tool to analyse the bite and measure the muscle activity, allowing the dentist to precisely evaluate your bite, muscles, and range of motion. It also measures the forces and timing of the bite to see if they are even or need adjustments.

Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR) is a computer- guided form of treatment that makes minor adjustments to teeth, improving occlusion and allowing the muscles to relax. By improving occlusion and relaxing muscles, pain can often be improved or eliminated.

This computer-guided treatment for patients predisposed to TMD (grind or clench a lot or have sore muscles and teeth) has proven to improve or halt disease progression.

Lawrence Park Dental is among few dental offices that offer digital bite analysis and DTR therapy in Toronto.

How the luxury travel industry in Toronto is adapting to COVID-era demands

Mere months ago, sinking your toes into warm, glittering beaches or traversing cobblestone streets soaked in old-world history was entirely out of reach as the COVID-19 pandemic catapulted Canada into a third wave. But with borders reopening, the travel industry has had to change course slightly to cater to the desires of those looking to travel again. Luxury travel companies, forced to lay low for months or close altogether, are experiencing a potential resurgence now – and it’s possible that they’re uniquely poised to entertain these COVID-era changes.

Toronto-based couple Jamsheed and Jennica Pocha were confident the industry could bounce back and founded their new luxury lifestyle and travel business, The Pelican Club, in the middle of the pandemic. This members club specializes in bespoke, luxury travel planning for individuals, families, corporations and executives, an it was borne out of years of experience in hospitality and tourism and a rapidly changing industry in the wake of an ongoing, global pandemic.

“There are so many aspects of life you would never hesitate to appoint a specialist for. Your personal life and time off should be no exception,” says the couple.

The pair studied together at the acclaimed hospitality management school Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne in Switzerland and worked at various luxury hotels in London, Rome, Barcelona and the Caribbean before moving to Toronto in 2017. It was then they began working on a business plan for what is now The Pelican Club – and now that restrictions are easing, the Pochas appear to have launched at just the right time.

“Whether it’s a weekend in New York or a month of island hopping in Indonesia, we are your travel agent, personal assistant, concierge and ‘that well connected friend’ all wrapped into one,” they explain.

In a world that felt stalled for so long, travel helps ignite a spark in people and a sense of hopefulness, excitement and allure. While the industry has suffered because of COVID-19, forcing airlines, hotels and tour companies to navigate stay-at-home-orders, travel bans and border closings, luxury travel businesses promises a solace for anxious travelers looking to get back out into the world and impeccable destinations begging to be experienced safely and hassle-free.

The pandemic has changed many travelers’ outlook on vacations

According to George Alexandrou, CEO of Alexandrou Travel Design, another luxury travel company based out of Toronto, the ongoing pandemic has created a huge shift in not only practical concerns surrounding cleanliness, space and COVID-19 protocols but also an emotional shift in the ways travelers are choosing to invest their time and money.

“Through COVID, people have realized the importance of family and so we are seeing more multi-generational trips and trips with families and their kids, curating their experiences so the whole family can participate.”

In addition, he has seen an uptick in more purpose-driven travelers. These are individuals increasingly seeking itineraries backed by socially-conscious suppliers and hoteliers and/or choosing experiences that offer volunteer opportunities baked in.

The Pochas’ opinion is similar, predicting that, “destinations that can find ways to manage their impact on the environment and local community while maintaining exceptional service will be the next generation of luxury.”

Predictably, health and safety is also at the forefront for consumers, with many travelers seeking out more intimate transportation and accommodation options.

“We have noticed an increase in requests for private jets and villas and smaller resorts or hotels. For understandable reasons, people want more space,” says Andrew Satkowiak, Executive Vice President of The Luxury Travel Agency, another Toronto-based company that focuses on highly-curated, luxury experiences for the upmarket jetsetter.

Demand for travel services is on the rise

Andrew has also noticed a move toward more impulsive bookings, in stark contrast to pre-COVID times when many people would put off bucket-list trips for years and years.

“If nothing else, the pandemic has shown that none of us know what tomorrow will bring and now more than ever people are ready to enjoy life again.”

The Pelican Club knows this firsthand. After a slow start due to a mid-COVID launch, the duo are busier than ever booking trips to increasingly sought-after locations like Fogo Island in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada or Nihi Sumba in Indonesia.

For the Pochas, luxury travel is less about how exotic the destination is or what swanky excursions or accommodations you book and more about the service you experience while you’re there. The pair aims to emulate the exceptional service model they expect of their vendors and partners throughout the trip-planning process, too, so luxury is bestowed upon you long before your trip even begins.

Parents petition to remove Ontario principal for being Iron Maiden fan

Iron Maiden in concert, 2017

A petition to remove a principal at a St. Catharines public secondary school for being an Iron Maiden fan has been taken down.

The Change.org petition was reportedly created by a parent who saw Instagram photos of Sharon Burns, the principal of Eden High School, after she posted a photo of a doll of Eddie — Iron Maiden’s villainous zombie mascot, and a hand-drawn pic that read 666. Iron Maiden is a heavy metal band from the 1970s and the number “666” is identified as the number of the “beast” as mentioned in the biblical Book of Revelation; it is also featured in artwork by the band.

The petition, which received 553 signatures before it was closed, was titled “Eden High School Principal, Sharon Burns, Needs to Be Transferred Immediately!” It read, “We are deeply disturbed that the principal assigned to the school blatantly showed Satanic symbols and her allegiance to Satanic practices on her public social media platforms where all the students can see them under @edenprincipal (not her personal account).”

“Please replace her with another principal who aligns with the values of the families at Eden and will not sabotage the teaching or upholding of those values and will not try to introduce impressionable students to Satanic practices or symbolism.”

The petition quickly gained traction on social media, but not in any way in support of its message.

One message even included a personal note from hard-rocking Toronto musician Danko Jones inviting the principal to one of the band’s upcoming concerts.

In an unexpected turn of events, a counter petition in support of Mrs. Burns was created. As of publication, it has over 22,252 signatures (once it reaches 25,000 signatures, it will become one of the tops signed on Change.org).

“Recently, there has been a petition going around to ‘remove’ the principal of Eden high school,” the petition states. “It is ridiculous that a couple of parents only judge her role as a principal only based on an Instagram post. (About liking the band Iron Maiden. That’s it.) Eden High School is a public school. Not a Christian school. If you somehow don’t like the principal of your child, grandchild, relative, etc.’s school, then send them to another one.”

The statement continues that Mrs. Burns has made Eden a safe space for many people, and is “probably one of the best and most enthusiastic principals” the school has ever had.

“This whole thing is hypocritical,” one parent commented on the petition. “If your kids can’t handle being exposed to iron maiden, they’re not gonna get anywhere in life.”

Mrs. Burns appears to have deleted the controversial Instagram post, although her Twitter bio still states she is “fueled by metal & ska. & chickens.”

The story has been covered by media outlets around the world including Rolling Stone, Complex and NME. The band just released its highest-charting album in its 45-year-history.

Children’s dental care – making them feel safe and secure

Q: What are the ways Pediatric Dentists can render treatment for children?

A: There are several choices of treatment modalities that help children be more at ease to receive dental work. These choices are made weighing the patient’s age, scope of work to be done, previous dental and medical history. With every patient interaction, Pediatric Dentists employ behaviour management techniques. Some of these techniques are: Tell-Show-Do where every step is explained in age- appropriate language and demonstrated visually before starting, Distraction, Positive Reinforcement, and many more.

In addition to behavior management Pediatric Dentists offer treatment with nitrous oxide or laughing gas, oral sedation, and general anesthesia. Nitrous Oxide or laughing gas provides analgesia and helps the child feel more relaxed during dental treat- ment. Oral sedation can be combined with laughing gas to help children who are moderately anxious receive dental treatment awake and calmly. Pediatric Dentists also can prescribe a medicine that a child takes prior to their dental appointment to help them relax.

Lastly, general anesthesia can be used when the child’s age, scope of work, and the patient’s degree of nervousness for dental treatment prohibits completion of dental care awake. General anesthesia is a mode of treatment where the patient is treated asleep. General anesthesia is given by anesthetists trained to administer this type of sedation. The anesthetists work with Pediatric Dentists as a team. Nitrous Oxide, Oral Sedation and General Anesthesia are all safe treatment modalities that can be tailored to meet each child’s dental and developmental needs. Pediatric Dentists strive to render treatment with positive behaviour outcomes so that children feel safe and happy to receive dental care.

Q: Why should I seek treatment for my child at a Pediatric Dentist?

A: Pediatric Dentists have 2-4 years of extra training treating children. The training includes clinical and pharmacologic training in the dental management of children while focusing on their emotional and psychological needs. Pediatric Dentists aim to foster positive relationships with their patients so that they continue to seek good oral care throughout their lives.

Why your parent’s care should be managed by a nurse

Lisa Wiseman is the President and founder of Eldercare Home Health Inc. Lisa is Gerontological Nurse Certified (Canada) GNC(C) through the Canadian Nurses Association. Eldercare Home Health has been providing PSW care, that is actively case managed by Nurses, to Seniors in Toronto for over 25 years. Call us today to learn more!

Your mom is finally going back home, but the hospital’s saying she’s going to need help. Now what? How do you find the right home health care provider?

If your parent is in the hospital or is being discharged from the hospital, has Parkinson’s, dementia or has had a stroke, or is taking medications, it’s important that the care they receive is supervised and case managed by a Registered Nurse, or Registered Practical Nurse.

PSW (Personal Support Worker) caregivers are key team members in the provision of care, but they do not have the education or credentials to manage your parent’s more complex care needs.

It’s important that an experienced, qualified Nurse be available day or night, weekends and holidays to answer any questions from, and provide direction to, the PSW caregivers who are providing hands-on care to your parent.

It’s especially important that a Nurse be available should your parent’s health status unexpectedly change. The Nurse can determine and implement the correct course of action.

Nurses understand the difference from both a process point of view, and medically, between what is happening and what should be happening. They see the big picture, including the impact of different medications, treatment options and therapies, and can help advocate for your parent on a profession- al level.

Having Nurse case managers who are actively involved in your parent’s care means that potential medical issues can be recognized sooner and action can be taken proactively, avoiding trips to the hospital.

Nurses can help dramatically and positively impact your parent’s overall health and wellbeing, and recovery from illness and surgery.

Hiring a home health care company that provides PSW care that is actively case managed by Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses is probably the single most impactful decision you can make when arranging care for your elderly parent.

Attend a spooky Victorian seance at a haunted farmhouse in Toronto

Jaymes White séance

Mentalist Jaymes White is hosting an authentic Victorian séance in Toronto from Oct. 1 to Nov. 27. The Eatonville Farmhouse will be held at the farmhouse of the same name, one of the city’s last remaining farmhouses from the Victorian era.

White’s shows have been completely sold out across Canada since 2015. The séance groups have been reduced to 13 -16 guests in accordance with the Covid-19 protocols.

Participants will meet outside The Red Cardinal Tavern at 555 Burnhamthorpe Rd., unit 102. They will then be escorted to the Séance location.

White, who is originally from Ottaway, said the inspiration behind these seances was to create a different experience that didn’t use jump-scare tactics.

“We wanted something that was very psychological like in your head, something that [makes] you question everything,” White said.

White uses hypnotic suggestion and mind control in his séances and has also trained his memory to be more powerful.

Eatonville will recreate the séances from the Victorian era, which used different techniques such as pendulum, automatic writing, and table rappings with everyone holding hands in a circle.

Keeping with the Covid-19 guidelines, White said he will replace table tapping with Shimenawa, a Japanese technique that uses an enclosed rope for ritual purification in the Shinto religion.

“They believe if you hold onto the rope and you’re in a circle, [the rope] protects you and ward off evil spirits. So instead of holding hands, we’re gonna hold a rope in a circle,” White said.

As a collector with over 300 haunted items, White said he’s always wanted to host a show at a location like The Eatonville Farmhouse that has several haunted items.

“[The séance] is based on the things in the house, rather than the house,” White said. “We’re not 100% sure yet because we haven’t been there long enough, but we believe because of everything in the house, that’s what makes it haunted.”

White said the best way to prepare for the seance is to keep an open mind.

“If you go into this with a closed mind and you don’t really care, nothing’s gonna happen because you’re not allowing yourself to have something happen.”

If you still haven’t considered making your Will and Powers of Attorney, please do so because if you don’t you are not doing your beneficiaries or yourself any favours! If you neglect to organize your personal affairs the costs to your estate or yourself personally may be significant.

To refresh your memory, a Will is your way to ensure that your property is distributed to the individuals and charities you would like to benefit on your death. The Will comes into force the day you die. If you don’t have a Will in place when you die, your estate will be distributed in accordance with the provisions of the Succession Law Reform Act, with the result that your assets could go to people you may not intend to benefit, and people you want to leave to benefit your assets to may miss out. Don’t let that happen.

To be valid, a Will must be in writing and signed by yourself in the presence of two witnesses. There must be three people at the table to see each other sign. Sounds straightforward, but these formalities must be followed, otherwise the Will may not be valid. Your witnesses should not be persons also named in your Will to receive a gift, nor should either witness be the spouse of a person named to receive a gift in your Will.

No time for the formalities of a proper Will? In a pinch, you may make a Holograph Will. This is a less formal document, entirely handwritten by you, signed and dated by you at the end of the document. If all these particulars are followed, it may be valid. It may be dangerous to do a Holograph Will if you don’t know what you are doing and certainly if you have assets of any size. Not only do you have to follow the formalities highlighted here, but you have to word the document correctly so that everyone understands it. Furthermore, if you type your Will out on the computer, then print, date and sign it, this Will may not be recognized as a valid Holograph will as it is not in your own handwriting. Then your estate is back at square one and your property will be distributed in accordance with the Succession Law Reform Act.

Don’t forget Powers of Attorney, a real must for both Property and Personal Care. An experienced Wills and Estates lawyer can streamline the process and ensure you don’t trip into any pitfalls.

Popular plant-based fast food spot comes to Little Italy

0
Odd Burger

Those in search of vegan chicken nuggets and burgers (not to mention highly addictive french fries) can finally get their fix in Toronto.

After opening in Vaughan in early July, vegan fast food emporium Odd Burger (formerly Globally Local Fast Food) opened an additional location in the GTA last month.

Despite the name, Odd Burger serves more than just patties and buns. The entire menu revolves around plant-based protein and dairy alternatives, but Odd Burger seeks to replicate the fast-food experience through more than just taste. Self-checkout kiosks, automated machinery, and ‘smart kitchens’ designed for delivery and takeout allow Odd Burger to mimic successful fast food strategies while reducing their environmental impact.

The new spot, located at 492 College St., officially opened on Sept. 17. The fast-food chain also has plans to open a location on Broadview Avenue. While no official date has been set, according to several recent comments on the company’s Instagram page, an update will be released shortly.

Since the addition of a location on College St., Odd Burger has been busy expanding with an aggressive growth plan.  Most recently, Odd Burger added a franchise in Windsor on Oct. 2 at 13458 Tecumseh Road and another in London, Ont. on Oct. 1 at 645 Commissioners Road East. Odd Burger also has plans to open an outpost in Hamilton, with an opening date to be released shortly.
