The best patios in the Annex

Nobody knows the hottest spots in town better than a sleep-deprived student—especially when you’re looking for coffee to wake you up or a drink to drown your sorrows. With UofT’s St. George campus right next door, the Annex offers a lively life of students exploring al fresco eateries, pubs and restaurants. It’s sure to draw you in no matter how long ago you were in school.

These are the top places to find patios in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood.

Chadwick's offers two patios depending on the kind of vibe you're after. The cozy front patio is ideal for people-watching on the bustling streets, and maybe seeing that old professor you didn't like back in college. In the back, a high wooden fence frames the secret patio, while folding chairs and picnic tables gives it a super casual and laidback feel—perfect for a post-work beer. With Chadwicks’ very dedicated neighbourhood regulars, you’ll want to arrive nice and early to snag a seat.
Paupers really comes out on top—rooftop that is. With views of the CN Tower, the patio is the perfect place to try out Pauper’s recently released summer food and drink menu which includes some extra special cocktails. At Pauper’s, the party doesn’t stop so grab one drink on the colourful and spacious patio before heading down to the lounge for some live music all weekend long.
All the UofT undergrads will tell you that the Madison Avenue Pub (or the Madi as the cool kids call it) is the hippest spot in town for a post-exam pint. With long picnic tables side-by-side, this rooftop patio is great for large groups, or to meet fellow scholars—or partiers.  The Maddie has also just released a fresh new summer food & drink menu, giving you a reason to sit in the patio’s sun all afternoon.
The Duke of York is a classic English pub made for weekend drinks with the boys. Shaded by hanging greenery, the back patio offers a causal and spacious area enclosed by high fences and pine wood furniture. The Duke of York will have you feeling like a student again—but don't worry, their weekend brunch is the perfect hangover cure for mornings after one too many pitchers.
If student pubs are well behind you, Proof Bar & Patio might just be the spot for you. Located at the Yorkville Royal Sonesta Hotel, Proof is the best place for a drink after a day in the office. Sleek and comfortable sofas compliment wooded tables and electric firepits. You’ll want to come in your best attire as this is definitely the place to update your Instagram feed with pictures that will have your followers thinking you’re sipping a martini in New York.
