The Best Tres Leches in Toronto

Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, Taste Test judge Mark McEwan samples tres leches, a sweet Mexican sponge cake. Tres leches gets its name from the three milks that the cake is soaked in to make it (tres leches literally means three milks).

“Everything worked well in this dessert,” McEwan said, describing the cake as “nicely balanced.” McEwan noted that the winning tres leches has a lovely “buttery taste.” He liked that while the texture looks light and airy, the cake “still has some body” when you take a bite. 521 Bloor St. W., $4.25
"This is a moist tres leches," said McEwan. "It almost reminds me of custard. This dessert is not overly sweet in a positive way. You are not overwhelmed. It's very comfortable, very familiar and very easy to enjoy." 111 Dupont St., $10
"It has a different texture from the rest of the desserts. It's very rich tasting and sweet," said McEwan. "It will be a hit for those with a sweet tooth." 631 Bloor St. W., $6.50
"This was my first experience of a deconstructed tres leches," said McEwan. "Very untraditional and surprisingly good. Different layers of texture. It has crunch to it! This will be a great hit with kids." 18 Tank House Ln., $10
“This, at first glance, does not have a classic look," said McEwan. "I really enjoyed the texture of the cake It also has a high vanilla taste. You can see that this has a lot less milk." 3337 Bathurst St., $8
"It's a very milky tres leches," said McEwan. "The sweetness is very evident. I like the airiness of this dessert — it adds some lightness" 2780 Hwy. 7, Unit 105, $3.50
