Toronto’s Best Veal Sandwiches

IVANA'S WINNER: It’s a close competition between this and Dante’s for Ivana’s first place, but she finds herself reaching back for this double-stacked sammy again and again. “This one’s softer,” she says. “I like everything about it.” 861 York Mills Rd., $9.49

ROB'S WINNER: Rob falls head over heels for this one. “Wow, that’s good,” he says. “It’s got a perfect balance of the bun and filling. They’re all going to be messy, but this one holds it together.” 8 Kincourt St., $10

This new Annex entry comes with peppers, mushrooms and onions, but the bread loses a few points. “It seems like a little bit of a whole wheat bun effect going on, which I’m not against,” says Rob. “But it’s a veal sandwich.” 934 Manning Ave., $11.50

The sammy from 905 legend Dante’s lands in the top three for both Rob and Ivana. Ivana loves the baguette. “The tomato sauce is really, really good,” she says. “Love the tenderness of the veal.”  8700 Dufferin St., #18, $13.19

Rob commends Sugo’s sandwich for its sesame bun and the sheer heft of the filling, but he and Ivana think that it could do with a bit of seasoning. “It’s not a bad sandwich,” says Ivana. “It’s just missing acid.” 1281 Bloor St. W., $13

Both Rob and Ivana praise this humble offering from Terroni for its smoky flavour (it is the only one that is grilled), but deem it a tad too basic. “I like that it’s simple, but it’s missing a lot,” says Ivana. 57 Adelaide St. E., $15.95

Uno Mustachio’s is packed with garnishes. “It’s got a very fresh sauce,” says Rob. “It’s got peppers, mushrooms and onions. This is a tasty one.” His only complaint is that it lacks some seasoning. 95 Front St. E., $10.85

Rob thought that while the breaded veal sammy from Boccone was a little underseasoned, he found that the yellow peppers and cheese made up for it. 1378 Yonge St., $14
