Bell backs off Leslie site for cellphone tower

Bell mobility recently announced in a letter that it has dropped controversial plans to erect a cellphone tower at 4800 Leslie St., near Sheppard Avenue.

“We’re pleased that common sense prevailed,” said local resident William Marlatt. Marlatt, along with Wilfred McOstrich, formed the Anti-Bell Coalition (ABC) when he learned the company was eyeing a site that would have put the proposed pole within metres of his house. The neighbours worried about the impact it might have on health and property values.

Marlatt said he’s relieved that the tower won’t be going in near his house, and he’s grateful for all the support the ABC’s campaign received from neighbours and politicians and through the media. Bell is currently looking at a range of options, said company spokesperson Julie Smithers.

Councillor Shelley Carroll said she’s happy to see Bell has listened to residents and decided to take a step back. “They got the response that I believe they deserved,” she said. “It’s a really good success story for the residents.”
