Extortionist targets Leaside realtor

0

Leaside resident and realtor Patrick Rocca said he has received multiple emails threatening to ruin his reputation and that of his family, unless he hands over $250,000. The person responsible claims to belong to the international hacker group Anonymous.

Rocca said he has received five emails since Oct. 4, with the most recent sent Nov. 13.

“The gist of it was: the person doesn’t like me, they’re tired of my cowboy attitude and my ads all over the area, they’ve created a website, and if I don’t pay them x amount of dollars they’re going to ruin my career and send out flyers,” said Rocca.

Rocca said they asked for US$250,000 by bitcoin (a way of transferring international currency anonymously).

“This was not a scam. This was clearly a threat because it was personal. They mentioned my wife, my daughter and my son by name,” he said.

Three websites meant to besmirch Rocca and his son, who is currently attending university, have already been created, and the Toronto Police Service (TPS) is investigating.

“The first [website] basically said I was a crook and a thief, and I was a cocaine addict. It was drivel.… It was all fabrication. There was no substance,” he said.

Constable Jenifferjit Sidhu, spokesperson for TPS, said the Tech-Crime Section of TPS’s Intelligence Division has been successful in taking one of the websites down but has not been able to identify the individual responsible.

“It is difficult to determine who or where [the websites] originate from when it comes to Internet crime of this nature,” said Sidhu.

Given the level of detail and personal information included in the emails, Rocca believes the person is a member of the local community.

“It’s obvious the connection is Leaside.… There’s no doubt. There’s blatant hints in a lot of emails that it’s a local individual,” he said.

Rocca said the person responsible also made claims that he or she had hacked into his database through his agency’s website. Although a security scan determined that was not the case, Rocca sent out thousands of emails to everyone on his database through Bosley Real Estate Ltd., Brokerage, alerting them to the situation.

“When you bring the family into it, that crosses a line. This is criminal, it’s harassment, it’s extortion, and this individual, when and if they’re caught, will go to jail,” he said.

Local girl inspires bald is beautiful campaign

0

Residents in the Bedford Park community are going bald this winter, and they’re doing so for Katarina Burgess, a brave Grade 5 student at John Wanless Public School who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Katarina has osteosarcoma, the same type of cancer that affected Terry Fox. On Nov. 17 at Starks Barber Company near Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue, locals came out to  shave their heads for the Bald and the Beautiful event alongside Katarina’s parents John Burgess and Rhonda Bosch and their family and friends. The team raised more than $44,000 for Kids Cancer Care and the Childhood Cancer Canada Foundation. Katarina’s twin brother Alex Burgess (left) and classmates Daniel (centre) and Grant were three of many to shave their heads for the cause.

A two-person race for T.O. mayor?

0

The fresh, relatively young Valérie Plante has been elected mayor of Montreal with a majority of like-minded councillors, putting an end to the old boys’ network in that city hall. Can that kind of a change be expected soon in Toronto?

To quote a character in the George Bernard Shaw play, “Not bloody likely.”

We seem stuck in the mud in this city, and those who might offer change seem unlikely to be candidates in the municipal election next October.

Councillor Joe Cressy is the kind of person this city needs as mayor. He’s young, progressive, politically skilled in getting things done and has an appealing manner. He works well with political opponents yet remains clear about issues. But he has no intention of running for mayor next fall.

To be successful, one must have a profile in Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke, and Joe’s still a downtown kid.

Desmond Cole is another name that’s mentioned as a mayoralty candidate. He, more than any other person, has defined and clarified the issue of police discriminating on the basis of skin colour, and his intervention was key to largely putting a stop to carding by police.

But Desmond no longer writes for the Toronto Star, and his activist pursuits have barred him from appearing before the Toronto Police Services Board. It means his voice is not heard as often as it should be.

Many thought Richard Peddie, the businessman associated with MLSE, would be a candidate. His web site, forabettertoronto.ca, certainly makes the case for him as a candidate, but he has confirmed he is not running.

We need this kind of pushing from the margins, and his recognition that an outsider faces big challenges in an election for the city’s top job shows a strong sense of reality on his part.

With a council of more than three dozen, one would expect several councillors to emerge at least to test the waters about running, but that hasn’t happened.

Shelley Carroll from Scarborough looked ready to jump in, but decided instead to seek a seat in Queen’s Park with Kathleen Wynne.

The challenge everyone faces is the city-suburban split: issues that appeal to those living in the older, denser parts of the city largely built before the Second World War are different from the issues in the suburbs built after 1950. It’s difficult to straddle that mammoth divide.

The mega-city gave the majority of votes to suburban politicians, and city issues don’t go too far. It means decisions get very muddled in the city. Which explains a lot about Mayor John Tory who looks so dithery as he tries to straddle the divide.

He spends much time worrying about traffic congestion and splurges billions on a Scarborough subway extension that might satisfy a dumb suburban dream but insults anyone who wants to spend money wisely to improve transit in Toronto.

He will spend half a billion dollars to keep a section of the Gardiner standing when the world would be better off if it were taken down. He’s willing to talk about affordable housing but not so willing to take the actions needed to actually build some.

The mega-city political muddle explains why Doug Ford is a serious challenger. He’s a bamboozler when it comes to sensible city policies, realizing that attracting media attention is better than trying to appeal to both camps, a skill he might have learned from his late brother Rob.

But Rob Ford had an innocence about him that was appealing, whereas Doug Ford has a thuggish presence that is a bit scary to many people. Yes, there will probably be two dozen people who will put their names forward in the mayoralty election, but they will be fringe candidates.

I think we’ll just see two people seriously battling it out — Mayor John Tory and Doug Ford —come next October.

Meanwhile, to our great envy, Ms. Plante will be making serious change in Montreal.

Ridiculous yet awesome

From the football field to the dance floor

A life of sports, hard work and a bit of luck is the formula Luka Milacic-Perusina used to make his name in the world of dance.

The Lawrence Park Collegiate grad recently competed on NBC’s World of Dance, where Jennifer Lopez is both a judge and executive producer.

Dance became a part of Milacic-Perusina’s life when, at age 10, he trailed his mother to a few of her dance practices.

After the first few tangos and cha-chas, his mom had him placed in a few lessons of his own. At the time, he didn’t think much of it.

“It wasn’t my passion in the beginning, but it was something that I liked doing a lot,” he says.

As he prepared to start high school at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute, only one thing was on his mind — sports.

At six feet, three inches and 210 pounds, Milacic-Perusina was a great addition to the rugby, football and basketball teams at the school, and although his physical traits were inconsistent with the typical body type of a track and field athlete, he did that as well.

Then in Grade 11, Milacic-Perusina met his present dance partner, Jenalyn Saraza-Pacheco, and realized sports could become a hobby, rather than a full-time commitment.

“At first it was all about school and being on the football team. I really tried my best for those first two years to have school spirit and fit in,” says Milacic-Perusina, “But then I just realized that I wanted to do my own thing.”

His own thing transitioned from ballroom dancing to pro cabaret before welcoming their new style: “We are just Luka and Jenalyn now,” Milacic-Perusina says.

Their uniqueness saw them travelling North America for competitions and championship titles throughout high school.

After graduating from Lawrence Park Collegiate, Milacic-Perusina used the discipline learnt from his time as a high school athlete to be successful in his art.

“The athleticism I gained from playing sports helped me in a lifestyle that is athletically and physically based,” he says, “It helped me with training so much.”

That very work ethic proved beneficial when he and his partner won an amateur world championship in 2014 and finished fourth at the Blackpool Dance Festival in 2016.

Now in 2017, they stand resolute as the only Canadians who competed on the first season of NBC’s World of Dance

Their original style defined by riveting and extravagant routines landed Milacic-Perusina and his partner a spot on the World of Dance Live tour, leaving people across North America to marvel at their performances.

“Touring with WOD was cool because you meet so many people,” says Milacic-Perusina. “You go, do your thing, meet fans and see the cities you perform in.”

Their last leg of the tour took place across three cities in California during the last week of November.

Of course, it is only natural now to look ahead.

Milacic-Perusina, bound by confidentiality and uncertainty can’t say what is next. But he says that they are “looking forward to the next opportunity to make a big jump.”

In the meantime, he is continuing his studies at Ryerson University where he is enrolled in the sport media program.
